James Webb becomes a two weight World Champion
Holding a Cage Warriors world title makes you part of a particularly exclusive club. To achieve win a second one in a different weight class is practically unheard of.
But that’s where Team KF’s James Webb found himself late last year, parlaying a successful light heavyweight debut into a title bout with Andy Clamp. It was a gargantuan tussle that missed out on a Fight of the Year nomination by a whisker, but when all was said and done, Webb had etched his name into the history books.
Giovanni Fernandez’ incredible comeback debut against Jimmy Quinn
Cage Warriors 180 wasn’t just a debut in the Famous Yellow Gloves for Giovannni Fernandez, it was a fight for his family’s legacy. With his father and uncle – both CW veterans – in his corner, the Frenchman started with gusto, but little did he know, he was in for the fight of his life.
Badly cut and having endured an unforgiving beatdown in the first round, it seemed like all was lost. But there was a dogged determination in Fernandez that wasn’t ready to let him lose. What followed was one of the greatest CW comebacks of all time.
Justin Burlinson beating testicular cancer to make a successful comeback
Sometimes the fights we face outside the cage are far more significant that anything that takes place within. That’s where Justin Burlinson found himself last year, when a hospital visit for a routine operation ended with the discovery of testicular cancer.
Burlo is, as the kids say, built different. A full recovery, a return to training and a return to the cage followed, and what a return it was. The former title challenger pulled it out of the fire against Theodor Berggren, earning himself a second title opportunity in the process.
Kennedy Freeman’s Legacy Moment
Talk about Standing on the Shoulders of Giants. The term becomes a whole lot more serious when the giant whose shoulders you’re standing on are those of the pioneer of UKMMA. And if that wasn’t enough, he’s also your old man.
If Kennedy Freeman was feeling the pressure, it hasn’t shown since she strapped on the Famous Yellow Gloves. At CW 172 in Newcastle, ‘The Machine 2.0’ fulfilled her destiny, capturing CW gold in emphatic fashion and following in her legendary father’s footsteps to the UFC.
George and Harry Hardwick becoming the first brothers in CW history to simultaneously hold titles
We’ve already touched on the exclusive cohort that is the Cage Warriors champions club; only a select few who strap on the Famous Yellow Gloves will earn the right to call themselves champion. It’s even rarer for a single team to claim multiple titles simultaneously.
Middlesborough Fight Academy are the latest to achieve the feat, and to make it that little bit more impressive, their twin champions aren’t just teammates, they’re brothers.
With Harry capturing featherweight gold in May and George returning in September, the Hardwick Brothers are officially the first siblings in CW history to simultaneously hold the gold.
