McKenna vs DiSegni, Bouland vs Edwards announced for CW97 in Cardiff

Cage Warriors announce that women’s MMA prospect Cory McKenna will face Italy’s Micol DeSegni on September 29th, and former title challenger Brian Bouland will come up against Kris Edwards. Mason Jones, another Welsh prospect, is also confirmed on the card.

Cage Warriors 97, billed as the biggest night of MMA in Welsh history, is topped by Jack Shore in a bantamweight world title fight. But before Shore goes for gold in front of the Cardiff crowd, a number of Welsh names will look to bring home wins in this historic event.

Cory McKenna’s one-round domination of a much older and more seasoned opponent at CW91 spurred the UFC’s Urijah Faber, Cody Garbrandt and Andre Fili (who McKenna trained under leading up the fight) to proclaim her as the next big thing as they watched from the USA. She followed that performance with a hard-fought win over a second experienced opponent at CW94 in Belgium. It’s now time for McKenna’s toughest test yet.

Micol DiSegni travels from Rome, Italy on a 4-fight win streak, 3 of those being dominant finishes in the early rounds. DiSegni is no stranger to training with top UFC competition either, fighting out of Gloria Fight Center – the home of CW champion Mauro Cerilli and UFC fighters Carlo Pedersoli Jr and Alessio Di Chirico. Having the Jackson-Wink Academy on her side, most notorious for producing Jon ‘Bones’ Jones, also makes her one of the deadliest contenders in the division.

With determination and drive to match any in the strawweight division and a rounded, aggressive style beyond her years, McKenna is one to watch this year, but Micol DiSegni is determined to crush her hopes of remaining unbeaten on September 29th.

The second new fight to be announced is an intriguing bantamweight bout between Brian Bouland, who fought for the belt in Belgium at CW94, and Wales’ Kris Edwards. Edwards is now unbeaten in 4 fights, and pulled off a very impressive TKO win in his last hometown fight at CW91. Bouland has knockout wins over some big names on the Cage Warriors bantamweight roster, including Edwards’ teammate Josh Reed, and is looking to prove he’s still in the title conversation. There’s a lot to play for.

Also confirmed on the September 29th card is Mason Jones, still undefeated in the lightweight division, who steps up at Cardiff’s Ice Arena for his 4th fight of 2018. A number of bouts for the pro preliminary card were announced earlier this week featuring some of the strongest up-and-coming talent in Wales, including an exciting Welterweight match up between Aaron Khalid and Jamie Richardson.

“Wales is turning into a serious hotspot for European MMA, and there’s huge flow of talent coming out of the country right now,” says Cage Warriors President Graham Boylan. “We’re raising our game in Cardiff with a bigger arena and a bigger card than before for this reason. This will be a historic night for MMA in Wales.”
