Welcome to our next edition of Meet the PrizeFighters; as we take a look at the six welterweights competing for an incredible $50,000 cash prize and a shot at the Cage Warriors welterweight title!
Sean Clancy Jr
Age: 21
Record: 4-0 (3 T/KO, 1 Sub)
Nationality: Scottish
One of Europe’s hottest up-and-coming prospects, Paisley’s Sean Clancy Jr has been on the ‘one-to-watch’ list since his initially making waves during an impressive amateur career, which saw him capture a regional welterweight title and compete at the 2022 Four Nations Championships.
As the kind of athlete always striving to push his limits as a fighter, Clancy seemed positively elated at the prospect of an old-school, two-fights-in-one-night tournament.
“(It’s) real warrior type stuff. I’m very excited for it. I’m always at my most excited to fight straight after I’ve fought I always want to do it again straight after!”
He’ll get his chance on September 7th at the Braehead Arena, with the tournament winner having to get past a pair of opponents in the space of just a few hours in order to claim the life-changing cash prize.
But that’s no problem for the man many are predicting to be Scotland’s next break-out star.
After all, fighting is all he knows.
“I’ve always trained every since I was able to. I didn’t have many friends in my early years, I was always quite different. All I’ve every thought about since I can remember is fighting, it’s always been the focal point of who I am, doesn’t matter who you ask.”
“And the more I throw myself into it the more it separated me from a lot of people my age. So I grew up quite secluded up until about the end of my high school years. So this is basically all I’ve ever done.”
Thankfully, he’s pretty good at it. And now, with PrizeFighter, Clancy hopes that the skills he’s sacrificed so much to acquire will now start to pay dividends, as he’s not just fighting for himself.
“To be a fighter you have to be selfish, and the people that suffer as a result of that are the ones you love the most and are closest to you. To be able to provide and give back to these people the way they deserve will mean the world to me.”
“Hannah is a pillar in my life and has stood by me through thick and thin and to be able to make it worth her while.”
“But selfishly, if I was to be honest, the reason that stands my hairs up is that I get to showcase what my team and I already know I’m capable of; beating two of some of the best fighters in Europe in the one day and making them look like mismatches.”
Clancy is the youngest man in the tournament (he’ll turn 22 later this year) but feels his youth and – more importantly – his lack of battle damage will play in his favour.
“I’m the youngest with the least mileage but at the same time I’ve probably been training for longer than everyone in it. I’m a freak athlete and I’m a fighter at heart. I don’t lack anywhere.”
“(I’ll train) the same way I train for everything, with some minor tweaks; putting every bit of effort as I’m possibly able to into preparation.”
As the tournament rapidly approaches, there’s no trash talk coming from the Paisley man… just a promise.
“We’re going to fight anyway, anything I say here is just superficial. They’ll all know soon enough.”
The welterweight #PrizeFighter Tournament goes down as part of CW 176 from Glasgow’s Braehead Arena on Saturday, September 7th.
